With the track and field leagues having ended, many clubs are staging open meetings where athletes compete on an individual basis, and often there are medals at stake.

Chorley Athletic Club were out in force at the recent medal meeting hosted by Wigan Harriers at Robin Park, where a squad of seven young athletes won seven gold medals, one silver and a bronze.

Year 5 competitors Ruth Whipp and Lewis Henry both won two golds with both winning the javelin.

Ruth also came out on top in the high jump with a clearance of 1.05m while Lewis clocked 11.8 seconds for 75 metres on the track.

In the same age group Maxine Smith struck bronze in the long jump and just missed a medal in the 600m where she made fourth.

The youngest Chorley athlete taking part was Thomas Bebbington who won the Year 2/3 shot and added bronze in the 600m.

Leigh Jeffrey and Rebecca McDonald scored a 1-2 finish in the Year 4 girls’ 75 metres with respective times of 12.8 and 13.1 seconds but Rebecca got her revenge by winning the javelin where Leigh could manage only third.

Only Bethany Henry turned out in the Year 6 class, but her trip was well worthwhile with a pair of bronze medals in the 75m and javelin.
